Many experienced ESL classroom teachers wish to move into teacher training roles, but the pathway from teacher to trainer is not always clear. However, many organizations are in need of training for volunteer ESL teachers, providing opportunities for new trainers to gain experience. In this session, we examine several avenues that teachers can take to enhance their professional profile and build their training resume. First, we introduce and examine Literacy ConneXus’ TEX (Teaching English with Excellence) Apprentice program as a model for training the trainer in TESOL. The TEX trainings offer support and volunteer training to community and faith-based ESL programs across the state of Texas. Second, we consider short-term and occasional training needs that provide additional opportunities for moving from teacher to trainer. Finally, we review the path to academic TESOL trainer, including experience and educational requirements. We conclude with Q&A from prospective teacher trainers and discussion of issues that may arise on the path from teacher to trainer.
