In this session, teachers will be shown examples of a variety of supplementary materials that will enable students to make connections between their knowledge/experience and the new information. We will discuss the importance of how the content and materials should coincide with the TEKS and the ELPS, as well as, it must be appropriate for age and educational level. Using a variation of supplementary materials will clarify difficult concepts, make texts more accessible, solidify understanding, and keep students focused and engaged. A couple of examples would be having students create a chant to remember the steps for long division or adapting a text to include photos, subtitles, and focus questions. In this session, participants will leave with concrete ideas on how to incorporate Cornell notes, interactive notebooks, anchor charts, hands-on demonstrations, and Total Physical Response techniques in addition to ways to adapt texts to meet the needs of their learners.
